Paying in Japan: cards, cash and transport IC cards

Prepare more than one usable payment method and confirm acceptance at the places you will visit.

Choose for your trip

Credit or debit card

Check the store’s acceptance logos and your issuer’s overseas-use conditions. Acceptance is not universal, even within one neighborhood.

Japanese yen

Keep cash for businesses that require it, especially away from major city centers. Check payment conditions before a meal or stay.

Transport IC

Supported transport IC cards also work at shops displaying the compatible logo. Check balance and recharge methods; an IC balance is separate from a credit-card payment.

Before you travel

Phone payments

Do not assume an overseas payment app or phone wallet works at every Japanese store. Bring a usable alternative.

Before you leave

Save your issuer’s contact details and check card controls and any overseas fees directly with the issuer.
