These are editorial planning ideas for an ordinary rainy day, not live weather advice or a booked tour. Choose one plan rather than completing all three. If severe weather or transport disruption is announced, follow official guidance and reconsider travel.
Choose by what you want from the day
For a museum visit, start with Ueno. For shopping and a flexible lunch, start around Tokyo Station. For a specific art exhibition, check Roppongi. Your hotel location and the actual opening calendar may make a different choice easier.
Ueno: make one museum the main event
Choose the exhibition you want to see before setting out. Tokyo National Museum is an option for Japanese and Asian art; plan time to look rather than trying to collect several museum visits. Its usual Monday closure has holiday exceptions, so check the calendar for your actual date.
- Morning: check the museum calendar and choose the exhibition and ticket category.
- Midday: allow a museum visit and a seated lunch, in the order that suits your entry time.
- Afternoon: take a break nearby. Add a short park walk only if the conditions suit your group.
Tokyo Station & Marunouchi: a flexible shopping-and-lunch day
Use a compact area instead of crossing the city for every stop. Choose KITTE or shops around Tokyo Station as the main destination, then decide where to eat. The station is large: write down the building and exit you need before leaving the platform.
- Morning: choose one building or shopping area and look up its opening hours.
- Lunch: keep the meal near your main stop and leave room for queues or a change of restaurant.
- Afternoon: browse at your own pace, then return or add Ginza only if the extra travel is worthwhile.
Roppongi: an exhibition and an unhurried break
Choose one exhibition as the anchor of the day. The National Art Center, Tokyo has no permanent collection; check what is actually showing. Entry to the building is free, while exhibition charges depend on the exhibition. Tuesday is its usual closing day, with holiday exceptions.
- Before leaving: confirm the exhibition, ticket conditions and opening day.
- Main visit: allow time for the exhibition you chose, rather than assuming the whole building is a free exhibition.
- Afterwards: take a seated break and choose dinner in the same district if practical.
Before paying for a rainy-day alternative
- Check whether a ticket is tied to a date and time and what the cancellation rules say. Rain alone does not establish a refund entitlement.
- Compare the total cost: attraction admission, travel, lunch and any change or cancellation fee. This guide has no live prices or availability.
- Check luggage storage, seating and access needs with the venue. A day indoors can still involve long periods of standing.
- Choose meals near the main visit and check the menu and booking conditions. A cafe stop is a separate purchase, not included with an exhibition ticket.
